Happy Thanksgiving 2008

Well we survived another Thanksgiving at the City Mission Church. The last count I heard was 565 meals served, most were picked up or delivered to shut ins. A few though still showed up to eat at the church. The whole dinner went well & tasted delicious.

On Wednesday we broke up 100 loaves of bread to get ready for the making of the dressing. We ended up with 2 washtubs full of dressing.

This year the church purchased 26, 20 pound turkeys to be fixed. On Thanksgiving day we had one dropped off by a nice lady so we ended up with 27 turkeys this year. The ladies are picking the meat off the bones & then putting it in the roasters behind them to keep warm until we were ready to serve. Pastor Jeff was at the mission at 6:30am to start the meal preparations. Of course I didn't make it till 8:00am.

We chopped up 50 pounds of cabbage to make the coleslaw, it is also mixed together in a washtub.

Behind me is how we mix the potato's, yes we use instant potatoes, we had canned milk, water, butter, salt, pepper & the secret ingredient ..... CHEESE yummy. We mix it in a paint bucket with an attachment attached to a drill. Back in the day we mixed it with a big spoon, but that was hard, we are very Thankful to have the home made mixer now.

Sara got her new glasses today, she went to the eye doctor last Monday (11/10) & ordered them. Today they came in. She was so excited, she can finally see!! Her eye's had changed 5 steps from her last eye examine a little over a year ago.

Wow it's been a month and half since I last posted. Things have been really busy around here. Here is a run down of what all has happened in that time:

1) I did a trip to Chicago with my sister

Our Weekend

We went to Charleston, WV this weekend. The group included, me, Sean, Sara, Kayla, Diane, Bimbo, Tessa, Chelsea & Haley (Chelsea's friend). Joshua spent the night with Grandma & Grandpa Yost. The first stop was Walmart, nothing like driving an hour just to go to a Walmart. Never take teenage girls to Walmart with a camera.

The girls went to the movies and saw "Horton hears a who" but before they made it back to the movie, they had a photo shoot.

Our next stop was TGIFriday's, it was yummy!! I'm not sure who this guy is but the girls took a picture of him, you can see the resturant in the background & of course we had to take pictures while we were waiting on our food. I found out who the guy is, it's the front of the menu!! LOL

The next stop on our fun filled weekend was back to the hotel for a night of swimming, we told them they could swim till 10pm when the pool closed, instead after less than an hour they were ready to back to the room.

We ordered pizza later Friday night, and ate it around 10pm, way to late for a pizza, but the girls were hungry again.

Saturday we stopped by the Mall on our way home. All in all it was a great weekend, everyone had a good time.

April emailed me a cute picture of Sara from Heather's birthday party back in Jan. Her hair is long in that one & then I want to share one of her taken yesterday with her hair short. Personally I like her hair shorter.

Sara has been wanting me to come up and have lunch with her, so yesterday I stayed after Josh's Easter party and ate lunch with her & Kayla. She was happy, you can tell by the smile.

Today was Josh's Easter Party at school. They all got to wear their "Easter Outfits", only we decided to just dress in dress pants & sweater and save our Easter Outfit for Sunday. They had a Tea Party, which was biscuits & cookies with juice for the snack & then they got to hunt Easter Eggs. Josh had a really good time, he has been playing with 3 eggs all afternoon, they are shaped like R2D2 from StarWars which he LOVES.

Today I spent the whole day printing 8x8 scrapbook pages. I had made them months ago but hadn't gotten around to printing them. I am loving digital scrapbooking, it's so easy & clean up is .. well there is none. Here are a few samples of my work.

Blog Update

I was told it was time to update my blog .. this one is for you Nat.

Our house is still on the market, it's been 32 days and we have only had one person come and look at it. We continue to pray every day that the right family will come along. We are excited and sad about moving, it's really exciting now that we know where we will be going and it isn't that far from where we are now.

Here are some pic's of the house we are in now, it's been our HOME for almost 12 years, we really do love it.

Here is the house we are looking to buy, it's Sean's mom house, so he grew up in this house, he is so excited, as are the rest of us. The girls will not have to change schools if everything goes well and we are able to get the house

It's been a long time

I'm not a very good blogger, it's been weeks since my last post. I've been busy, thankfully I am almost ready for Christmas, just need to get some stocking stuffers for the kids. I've been working at the church everyday getting ready for the giving out of food & toy baskets. For those interested this is how the process goes.

1st they take families names, they did it 6 days in Oct & then the week after Thanksgiving & last Friday, ppl have to bring proof of residentency (we help only that live in the same county as the church) & proof of income. We fill out cards with their names & names of ppl living in the house with them, then if they have kids 16 and under we fill out a toys slip, which only has the ages of the kids (boys _ages______ girls ___ages_____) we ask if they have anything bought or layed away & what type of toys the children like (art / cars / trains / barbie's / bratz etc. etc.) We don't promise them these things but it helps to have an idea of what the child likes.

Next we take the parents name & put them on the wall (we tape table paper to the wall & then write on that). My main job is to find the boxes, I find what I think is the right size box for the # of kids in the family, then I put the name on the wall & then put the name on the box (last, first boy (age's), girl (ages)). I usually do about 8 - 10 per row & do a whole row at a time trying to size the boxes from tallest to shortest so it's easier to read the names when the day come to pick up the toys.

Filling is next, someone takes a slip off the top & see's the childrens age, then they go and pick out, normally 2 bigger type toys & one smaller (we have been getting donations from the dollar store, so that would be a small toy). All girls 12 and under get a doll/barbie/bratz. We have tables set up w/ certain things on it, a boys table, girls table, babies table, game table, teen boy, teen girl, that way toys are in the right age group when they go looking for something. We also put in Stuffed Animals, coloring boook's/crayons, reading books as extra gifts.

Dec 21 is the day we will give out, families will come to the church that morning, either between 8am - 10am or 10am - 12 depending on what days they signed up. They go in the church first and get a number when their number is called they go to the front and someone will pull their card & give them a ticket (they have to have that for their turkey). Then they go to the back of the church & the number of members of their family is called out & they walk up the hall & get a box full of canned food (food is boxed 1-2 in family, 2-3 in family 4-5 in family & 6 or more in family), plus a 10lb bag of potato's, bread & then outside to get their turkey.

Next they come over to another building for their toys, they line up for them and when they get to the front Mom asks for their name and she calls it out and runners will go and get the box & bring it to her, she double checks to make sure the dolls are in there & then gives them box, say's Merry Christmas & your welcome (I say it even if they don't say Thank You, and you would be how many don't say it) and that is it.

Here is a picture of the toys on each of the tables. That is my Mom & another worker, a family friend Jean in the background. They were putting batteries with the toys that need batteries with them. We try to always put batteries with the toys that require them.

I remember being a kid and going in and helping Mom get ready to give out toys for Christmas, back in the day we use to have to give out used toys & only new toy, God has blessed the Mission so much, we don't have to give out the used toys anymore. It was very time consuming to wash & clean all those toys, but again I say Thankfully we don't have to do that anymore.

Happy Thanksgiving, I hope everyone enjoys their day and gets to spend time with Family and Loved Ones. It will be a long day for us, first we will go over to the church and help prepare dinner for over 400, turkey is in the oven now. After that we will go to MIL for a get together with Sean's family.
